# Welcome Kit: Reach out to candidates
This guide is part of a welcome kit series for Juicebox users. Check out the [previous guide on running a search](https://docs.juicebox.ai/welcome-kit-run-your-first-search) if you haven't used natural-language search, filters, criteria, or shortlists yet.
In this guide, we’ll create and add candidates to outreach sequences. You can use email, LinkedIn InMail, and phone as channels to contact and nurture your top candidates in an automated but still personalized way.
You’ll learn how to:
* Set up your email and send-on-behalf-of (SOBO) to send sequences
* Create a new sequence with AI, from scratch, or by cloning an existing sequence
* Edit and personalize the content, including AI commands
* Tailor your sequences and content to maximize reply rates
* Add shortlisted candidates to a sequence and track their responses
## Integrate your email
The best candidate outreach is multi-channel: using email, social media, and phone. Passive candidates may not be checking professional networking sites or job boards, so you’ll want to use email as a key part of your outreach strategy.
Depending on your plan, each mailbox can send from 20-500 automated emails per day, so you can maximize outreach and deliverability.
To set this up in Juicebox, go to **Integrations** and then select the link to sign in with your email provider. Once your email status says **Connected**, you’re ready to reach out to candidates.
While you're in the Integrations section, select the three dots on the right side of your email address, then **Edit mailbox settings**. Make sure that **LinkedIn reply detection** is checked and that LinkedIn InMail notifications are sent to the same email you have connected to Juicebox. That way, Juicebox can detect and track replies to InMails you send candidates as part of sequences.
*Because emails sent on behalf of hiring managers, founders, or leaders tend to have higher reply rates, you’ll also want to set up **Send On Behalf Of (SOBO)** mailboxes.*
Select **Add a SOBO mailbox** to send an invite from Juicebox to the relevant person whom you’d like to send on behalf of. Once they accept the invite, their status will change from **Pending** to **Connected** and you’ll be able to use SOBO as part of your outreach strategy.

## Create a sequence
Juicebox lets you create and run automated sequences to reach out to candidates. This also means you can continue to contact candidates even when you’re out of the office, and you can easily follow up with candidates who replied when you return.
Select **Sequences** in the left-hand menu, then **New sequence**. Choose how to begin:
* **Generate a sequence with AI for one of your projects:** select a project shown in the dialog, or use **Choose project** to find another one.
* **Build from scratch:** start with a blank sequence and write the steps yourself.
* **Clone existing sequence:** reuse a sequence you or your team already created.
Selecting a project opens the composer to generate a sequence with AI. When available, it draws on your project’s intake notes, linked job, search criteria, company information, writing style, and past team sequences. It can also consult the web and tools you have connected.
**Composer chat** is the side panel on the left; your sequence canvas is on the right. Describe the role and company, tone, number and type of steps, language, and whether to include a scheduling link. When the chat asks for details or suggests a change, choose an option, type your own answer, or select **Skip**.
Use Composer chat to change the copy, steps, senders, or timing—for example, "Wait three business days before step 2." Changes appear directly in the canvas. If you ask it to remove a step, confirm the removal in the question card.
You can also edit the canvas directly. Click the title at the top to rename it. In each email card, choose the **From** mailbox, edit the **Subject** and message, or use **Cc** and **Bcc** to add recipients. Use **Add step** in the steps rail to extend the sequence, the step-type dropdown to choose the channel, and **Delete step** to remove a step.
Changes save automatically. Check the **Last saved at** indicator, then select **Done** to close the composer when you’re finished. Your chat conversation stays with the sequence when you reopen it. Use the stop button in Composer chat to interrupt a request and review any changes already made. Creating and saving the sequence prepares it for use; you’ll add candidates separately below.
You can add steps to a sequence that take place outside of email, such as LinkedIn or phone calls. But please note that these aren’t automated. You’ll have to take those actions outside of Juicebox, even though you can still use Juicebox to track them alongside candidate progress.
If you are working with a [Juicebox Agent](/juicebox-agents), you can ask it to create or edit a sequence in the same Agent conversation. Review the sequence in the **Sequence** side pane and keep giving feedback in the Agent chat. ## Schedule your sequence
Use the scheduling pill above the first step to choose whether it starts immediately or at a later date and time. Set the delay for subsequent steps to control how long Juicebox waits before each follow-up.
*Schedule steps within 2-3 days of each other to stay top of mind without overwhelming candidates.*
## What makes a good sequence?
Let’s make sure your sequence delivers high reply rates and attracts high-quality candidates to speak with the hiring manager. We’ll focus on email best practices, since this is the core channel you’ll use for sequences in Juicebox:
### Subject lines
* Keep subject lines between 5-9 words to capture the candidate’s attention
* Personalize the subject line with a variable, such as the candidate’s first name
### Email body
* Use the quick-add chips above the message or type **`/`** in the body to insert variables and personalization. Choose the **AI command** chip, or **AI Command** in the slash menu, to ask for a brief mention of the candidate’s relevant skills.
* Use **Snippet** to insert reusable content that you or your team have saved.
* Use the formatting toolbar to add **bold text** and links, and include emojis 💪 where they fit your tone
* Include **details and benefits of the job or company** to provide context
* Select the sender’s **signature** to reinforce your credibility
* Use **Network mention**, when available, to reference a shared connection
* Review the **Include unsubscribe** option before sending

### Other ways to increase reply rates
* Design sequences to have **3-5 steps**, as this captures **95% of reply rates**
* Send to a candidate’s **personal email address** for a **40% boost in reply rates**
* Schedule messages for **mid-morning (9am-12pm local time) on weekdays and Sunday** for the highest reply rates, and **avoid Fridays and Saturdays**
* Make your messages **concise**: shorter messages generally have higher reply rates
* Using SOBO, send the final emails in a sequence **on behalf of** a hiring manager, founder, or team lead for **a 50% boost in reply rates**
Select a passage in a message to **Proofread**, **Make concise**, or **Adjust tone**. Choose **Ask the Composer** to give your own instructions in Composer chat. Check the **Selected text · Step N** indicator, or clear it with **×** before making a broader request. To rewrite an entire step, choose **Edit with AI** from its slash menu. ## Test the sequence
Before adding candidates, select **Preview** on an email card to open **Email preview**. Use the contact selector next to **To** to choose a sample contact and check the resolved variables, AI personalization, signature, and footer. Repeat this review for each email step.
Under **Send yourself a test email**, enter your email address and select **Send Test** to check the email in your inbox. You can also ask Composer chat, "Send me a test of step 2." Test emails have **\[TEST EMAIL]** in the subject and use the current message, including your latest edits.

## Add candidates to a sequence
Once the sequence is saved and reviewed, you can start adding your shortlisted candidates to it. From a project’s shortlist, select the candidates you want to contact and select **Add to Sequence**.
You’ll see a preview of the emails; make sure to review these, including any personalization added via AI commands! Juicebox will flag any errors, like missing contact details, variables, or whether candidates are already in an active sequence.

## Track metrics on a sequence
Now that you’re reaching out to candidates using sequences, you want to see how they’re performing. Juicebox makes this easy for you by giving you deep analytics, by role, on your sourcing and outreach, all in one place.
From the **Sequences** tab, select any sequence to see how it’s tracking. You’ll be able to see the overall funnel of opens, clicks, replies, and interested candidates, plus the status of each candidate.
From this dashboard, use **Mark as Replied** to label replies as **Interested** or **Not Interested**. This will sync automatically to the shortlist page, so you can filter and review profiles based on their interest.
